Upgrade Cards

Upgrades are cards which must be attached to an existing card when you play them.

Depending on the Upgrade type, an Upgrade may be attached to Infrastructures or to Agents.

Once attached, the Upgrade gives bonus capacities to their associated card.

A player cannot use an Upgrade capacity directly, but instead uses the boosted Agent of Infrastructure attached; the Upgrade then has the same usage restriction as the card it is attached to.

For instance, if an Agent has 3 Investigation and receives a Scanner giving him +2 Investigation, the Agent will be displayed with 5 Investigation.

There are a number of other differences with regular Agent cards, detailed below.

No speed, no trait

Upgrades have no traits and no inherent Speed.

An exception is mobility upgrades, which only give Speed as a bonus to an Agent card.

Upgrades cost less...

Upgrades are drawn during the Opportunities Phase but a Director pays less to purchase them:

An Upgrade card cost 2 less points, and can then even end up costing 0 point and be picked for free.

... but they have an equipment cost

When attaching an Upgrade to a card, the target card must pay an Upgrade Cost displayed on the Upgrade card itself.

Agents must pay for this cost themselves, however Infrastructures can support them and pay for any Upgrade cost you want to attach.

Abilities can only be used once

Some Upgrade cards also have special abilities.

However, an Upgrade ability may only be used once; using that ability discards that Upgrade and put it into your discard pile immediately once the ability has been used.
